5 Internet Marketing Lies Keeping You Stuck

Hey,
My name is Wayne Lambert and it’s my privilege and honour to be posting on the blog of a good friend of mine, Simon Dodd.
When I first started out in Internet Marketing, I realised that something I’d heard again and again at the many Internet Marketing seminars and online courses that I’d studied was totally true. All the IM gurus said that you only ever need to master two things to become an outstanding success in Internet Marketing…
1) Traffic; and 2) Conversion
When you think about it, it’s absolutely true! What more is there to it than moving people from one place to your conversion environment (generating traffic) and then getting your visitor to take a favourable action from numerous possible actions (achieving a conversion)? Yes, I seem to almost dismiss all those other challenges we face as Internet Marketers and do so for a very good reason. During my time in Internet Marketing, I’ve learned that many people over-complicate things because they think that it really cannot be that easy. I too can be guilty of this and have to constantly remind myself of what’s important to me in the pursuit of my goals and the simple action steps that are necessary to accomplish them.
“You know there has to be some magic ingredient, some special software, a special contact with the key to the door… and if I could just find ‘it’, then I’d be in and would unlock the riches that await.”
Did you just read that and say, “yeah right!” Well, these are the irrational ideas that people have about making money online.
Allow me to go over a couple of the lies that are likely to be keeping you stuck in a trap. Can I call this the Internet Marketing Prosperity Illusion?
Internet Marketing Lie #1
Traffic = Money
Err… newsflash! No it doesn’t. Traffic converted into paying clients represents value which is measured in the exchange of money.
Internet Marketing Lie #2
“The money is in the list!”
I understand where this lie comes from and why people would say this. It makes them take action and build their own list. This is a mistake that many marketers make. They choose to build a list much too late when they’re building their online business. They take the view of saving their pennies in the short term and don’t give any consideration to the list’s long term value.
A list is your most qualified and most versatile traffic asset. You can drive traffic to any of your offers or blog posts if you have a relationship with the list. The relationship means that you provide value and results to your subscribers and you’re perceived as a likeable, trustworthy, authoritative source of quality information that solves a specific problem. You must position yourself as the “go to” person for the particular problem that you market yourself to solve.
Internet Marketing Lie #3
“There’s an inner circle of contacts and knowledge. If you’re in, you’re good… but if your face don’t fit, you’re out of luck!”
Whilst it’s vitally important to have a mastermind of contacts in the Internet Marketing, and indeed, the business world, the inner circle of knowledge is an illusion. This illusion is one that disempowers you if you choose to buy into it. I’m not saying for one second that you shouldn’t concern yourself with networking and finding a “mastermind alliance.” If you didn’t understand the term or concept I shared there, I suggest you read Napoleon Hill’s 1937 classic, Think and Grow Rich. I am saying that you can choose a more empowering belief that serves you in taking action. The knowledge and resources are out there for you to take and apply. What value can you exchange for them?
Internet Marketing Lie #4
“I don’t need to be good at sales to make a good online income.”
Seriously! I have heard people say this. So exactly how are you going to make money without selling someone something? I think many people conjure up a stereotypical image of a fast talking, slickly dressed salesman with the gift of the gab using every trick in the book to make you buy.
The trick (if that’s what you want to call it) for the online marketer is to use ethical persuasion to get their prospect to take action. This is done from the position that they know with absolute certainty that what they offer will help their prospect move to the next level. Notice how I said “to the next level” and not “to make five figures a month in your first 30 days online.” Many people have these wildly unrealistic expectations of making obscene amounts of money within their first few months online.
Internet Marketing Lie #5
“What’s with all this stuff about your mindset being important? Just show me how to do it, click by click, and I’ll be able to do it.”
If you’re the kind of person that thinks that mindset isn’t important, then I’d strongly urge you to reconsider. If your mind isn’t focused and you allow fear and doubt to debilitate you, then you’ll never be able to create lasting wealth. Action (a visible consequence) is the result of belief (an invisible character asset). Belief is the foundational mindset attribute which drives your desire, ability and motivation to take action in spite of the fear and challenges that await you in the world of Internet Marketing. If you’re not willing to condition your mind by using positive programming, then other people will most definitely use it and direct it for what they want! Take personal responsibility for your development as a successful Internet Marketer.
I hope you’ve enjoyed the article and that it has forced you to reconsider your thoughts, beliefs and assumptions.

Whatup, Wayne!
Yeah – this is ALL very sound advice.
1: Traffic != Money. AGREED.
Although, I suspect that most newbies don’t have the problem of getting huge amounts of traffic, only to find out that the money isn’t automatically flowing in. This is probably more common with intermediate-level IMers. I’ve found that it’s so important to build a good marketing funnel… and then to optimize the funnel based on what the stats are telling you, every so often.
2: The Inner Circle Lie. (KIND OF) AGREED.
I agree that there is no single Inner Circle.
But I do believe that having an inner circle is a BIG catalyst for success. The thing is – anyone can form a circle of friends and colleagues that help each other all the way to the top. So while I agree that we don’t need to get Mike Filsaime or Frank Kern or Alex Jeffreys to like us before we can make it big… we can partner with Internet Marketers at our level (or just ahead of us)… and support each other to success.
3: Relationship in the list > list. AGREED!
Pulling of a good relationship can be hard for newbies, because often newbies feel the need to earn money as soon as possible . That eagerness (sometimes desperation can scare of the most promising of prospects.)
4: No online success w/o Sales skills. AGREED.
LOL! Because I’m not a natural salesperson.
Unfortunately.
HOWEVER, I don’t think one needs to be able to go door-to-door, or cold call folks, to succeed. It simply means that the acumen required to understand someone’s needs, and present a compelling case for meeting those needs, is required in business. You don’t have to be outgoing (not all successful salespeople are). But I believe you have to build skill in the psychology of selling.
5: Mindset > Tactics
I can’t say enough about this point.
So I won’t.
AGREED!!
Great article! Hope to see more posts from you.

Hey Simon,
Great guest post there from Wayne and one of which I can totally relate to.
Each and every point outlined in the post couldn’t be closer to the truth but I think Wayne had already hit the nail on the head well before we even got to the Internet Marketing Prosperity Illusion when he said:
“You know there has to be some magic ingredient, some special software, a special contact with the key to the door… and if I could just find ‘it’, then I’d be in and would unlock the riches that await.”
This statement will be the cause of most online failures, until people realize that the internet is NOT a magic wand that will send you thousands of dollars to your bank over night, whilst sat at home watching TV.
Where did this Illusion come from?

Thanks for the comment Kerry,
I think the illusion has come from some of the so-called Guru’s showing videos and pictures of themselves living in big houses, driving fast cars and not working for many hours a day. What they don’t show is the month of hard work beforehand that is needed to get to this stage in their business. I think once people learn that there is no easy way some people drop out and we are left with only the ones dedicated to the cause.
Thanks again for stopping by.
Simon
Hi Simon,
IM Lie #1.
Nowadays people want to get to know you before buying. It may work for physical products from well known sites but not for information products.
IM Lie #2.
It’s true because it depends on the quality of the opt-ins. I just started to build a list and money isn’t pouring in like what the gurus said.
IM Lie #3.
Having a private circle is a great place to get accurate news and network with like-minded people. Minimum, you’re getting comments on your blog post. However, i’ve to disagree with this point as all successful marketers have a group, team or circle that they’re connected with. (Not talking about online, it’s the offline that’s important).
IM Lie #4.
I would say that this have everything to do with your relationship with your readers or list. Some sales skill is needed. However it can’t be replaced with the trust factor they have for you.
IM Lie #5.
Without the right mindset. All the above will fail. Not just in Internet Marketing, in life as well. This need to improve daily with self-improvement materials and exercise them daily.
Thanks you for such an insightful blog post.
Cheers,

Hi Cheekeong,
Thanks for your comments. For lie #3, I did say that I’m NOT saying that you shouldn’t build a network of contacts or mastermind – you absolutely should! I was simply saying that people have a notion that you only get success if your face fits and people ‘in the know’ let you in on ‘the secret to making money online’.
I’m simply saying don’t have that illusion.
Thanks for your comprehensive comment.
