Change your Mind Change Your Business!
My last mindset post got a great response so I have decided to do another one.
I truly believe in fact I KNOW that your mind is what makes your business a success or failure. The problem most people have is they have bugs in their mind that stop them from achieving success.
Now I am not talking about a lack mentality, I am talking about inherent bugs that have been ingrained in your mind over the years you have been alive. When you are born you have a success mindset, otherwise you would be in a wheelchair and a mute. When you were young you had no limiting beliefs to stop you.
This can be shown by thinking of a child climbing up a wall and walking along the top. They are fine walking all the way to the end as all they are thinking about is walking to the end and climbing down again. It isn’t until the relative says something like “careful you don’t fall” that the child starts to wobble and fall. The limiting beliefs have been introduced!
So as you can see these limiting beliefs can be ingrained from a very early age! You have to be very careful what you say around children as their minds are like sponges and they are likely to believe pretty much everything you say!
So how does this apply to you and your business?
Every decision you make relating to your business (and life in general) will either move you forward or hold you back. The trick is to recognise what that decision will do.
Andy Shaw once said to me when I asked him the question: “How do you avoid the scam artists and bad advice?”
“Ask your mind, what do I want to do?” If it is something that will not move you forward then your mind will tell you to go and make a cup of coffee or do something else.
Now this is quite an advanced state to be in and you have to have recognised your ego to be able to have this viewpoint otherwise your ego will be making the decisions for you and not your SELF!
So you may be asking “How do I know if my ego is making my decisions?”
Well this is the million dollar question! It takes time but I can introduce you to your ego right now if you are willing… (I learnt this technique from Andy as well)
15 Seconds of Happiness
I want you to close your eyes (not now! Read this first, it is hard to read with your eyes closed) and think of a time in your life when you were purely happy. A time when you were completely in the moment and that moment was joyous.
Now hold that thought for at least 15 seconds…
14….
15….
How did you do?
Don’t worry if you were unable to hold it. I couldn’t do it the first time and most people are the same. Most of us have way to many things to think about that distract us from the moment. This is your ego distracting you.
Don’t be angry, just observe your ego, say hello to him/her if you like (I do this)
Your mind doesn’t know the difference from something imaginary and something real. What does this mean?
Well when you visualize an event that happened in your life, according to your brain it is the same as experiencing it for real. I am talking scientifically here! The same neurons fire when you are vividly visualising something as fire when you are experiencing the event. Therefore you will feel the same emotions you felt at the time of the experience.
This is why we can get angry when watching the news, we literally project ourselves into the event that is happening on the tv and feel the emotions of the event that is being portrayed!
So how does this relate to your business?
You have to know where you are heading in your business and life to be able to make conscious decisions enabling you to move forward.
What does this mean? Well a lot of people go into business looking for fast cash with no real plan on where they are heading especially with online business and Internet Marketing.
This means they tend to float around from one thing to another with no plan, making a bit of money here and there but never anything stable.
One of the biggest and most valuable things you can do for your business at any time is to plan what you are doing and where you are heading. Without this plan you are essentially planning to fail!
Once this plan is in place you will be able to see if the decisions you are making are moving you forward or holding you back.
What’s the old saying of the 6 P’s…
Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance
That about sums it up for now but I will be following up on this post.
While you are waiting for that I have an interview with Andy Shaw that I am sure you will enjoy.

Nice to see someone as determined (as you are!) to succeed, sharing his experiences and thoughts – Kudos Simon!
I started IM back in 2007 – I think it was June or July – while I was still having two excellent offline businesses running smoothly; so obviously, it was more like a hobby to me.
I kept at it like that for a while … and made NO MONEY at all!
I spent lots though, buying stuff (as we already did at some point, didn’t we?) … hint: some still do…
However, not until much later (when, unfortunately, the economic downturn hit us all HARD) did I start switching from the hobby to the business mindset towards my IM endeavours.
Since then though, all started to fall in place and I finally started to make money.
It is all about this: IM is just another business, very much alike any offline business, just using different – specific – tools.
Change the mindset from playing with it as a hobby towards building a real business and that is the key to success.
Rant to myself: I wish I had this wisdom when I started.
I wouldn’t have lost almost 2 years in vain – I might have become a millionaire by now, hopefully…

P.S. Your comment ended up in my spam folder for some reason…:(
Yeah, I’m the KING of blog spammers, ain’t I?
(must be some settings on your filters, probably)
Anyway, it is good to see you spotted it and ‘corrected’ the situation.
Thanks, mate!
yeah you are the devil Spammer!!
I think it might have been your link at the bottom of the comment… Who knows though!
Nice Simon!
I read it intently and especially liked the 15 second “QUICKY’!
Mindset really is the Keystone to any marketer’s required tools.
I thought you did a great job!
See ya on Skype

HAHA, I missed a trick there! Although Im not sure I would have got the right sort of traffic if I had called it that!!
Thanks for the kind words though!
See ya on Skype indeed!

Hi Simon,
I’m pretty sure that it IS my mind set that’s holding me back from the success I’m working toward.
I’ve read Andy’s work and do recognize that I may be standing in my own way. Thank you for the reminder to keep my head in the game.
It’s wonderful to see someone, especially someone as young, helpful and determined as you, succeed in IM. You’re an inspiration to many, including myself!
Thanks for your support Lesley, it still shocks me to know I am an inspiration to people!!
The Mind is the most powerful and important thing you can change in terms of your business and your life, it is a tricky one sometimes though, especially with all the fear mongering we face in the daily news!
Great to see you back here again and thanks for commenting!
Simon
Hi Simon
I whole-heartedly agree that mindset is a key to a successful IM business, in fact any business. I’ve been playing around with IM for several years but recently I have become more serious about it. I find that for me one of the toughest obstacles I face is taking action. This is when I remind myself that I can do it, whatever “it” may be.
Robert Mulle
YEah, it wasn’t until I started to treat IM as a business instead of a hobby that I started to see an income! On the note of taking action, just dont be afraid to take Bold Action Now!!! As my mentor Alex Jeffreys says to me “Fail Forward Fast”
If you just keep on taking action you will find what works and what doesn’t, just dont be afraid to take that action!

Great post Simon, I love reading these particular topics. Have been down this same road and learned some of these same mistakes.
What I do is get up every single morning and thank God for the right opportunities, people and anything else he believes will benefit me while on this journey. It took only about two months and all the right things started showing up. Because of that, I didn’t have to worry about being scammed or someone selling me crap because none of that shows up. It’s been beautiful.
Again, enjoyed the post so thank you for sharing this. Always like to read about personal experiences that have helped you get to where you are now.

Awesome stuff! I guess you have been listening to Wayne Dyer then
It is so important to be grateful of what you already have and what you are going to have!
thanks again for stopping by!

Hi Simon, First of all, thanks for connecting on Facebook, I’ve now started following you on Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn…. Can’t get to much of a good thing
I was visiting Nick Lawless and saw that you helped him solve a problem he had with a 404 error. I take my hat of to people like you Simon, fairplay to you mate.
Onto your post:
You’re so right. As children we’re fearless, very inquisitive and always eager to try new things. That get’s replaced by fear and inabitions by the adults around us pointing things out.
I remember when I was first injured (spinal injury) I saw danger everywhere and would shout at my kids “Don’t do that” and “not like that” as I was seeing the danger and not the fun side of things.
It is about clearing our minds of the bugs as you called them, and seeing that “we can do this” whatever this maybe.
I saw a really good video over at IanIeba.com yesterday, it showed some of lifes major struggles that people have got through and then lead onto some examples of great people and what they’ve achieved.
To prove a point that shows how correct you are in this post Simon: When we get stressed and can’t sleep how many of us think of happy times or events to help us relax and get to sleep? I know I do it on a regular basis.
It’s all about get you mind in a positive place and then taking action to move towards our goals.
Back soon Simon,
Barry
Love it!
Thanks for the extensive comment and for following me everywhere!! I do feel there is a larger portion of people starting to come round to the positive mindset way of thinking! It can do wonders, even from the worst possible place you can change your mindset to get yourself turned round and heading in the right direction.
Thanks again for heading over here and taking the time to leave such an extensive comment.
I’ll see what is happening with my +1 button as well… I know it is still in BETA phase so that could be an issue… damn these new plugins
hehe Who knows it may fix itself with a bit of positive thinking!

Simon I forgot to mention that your +1 button isn’t working mate, it just turns red.
Thought you should know mate.
Barry
I’ll see if I can fix it! Or just replace it with another plugin
Excellent post Doddy,
Regarding the 6 “P’s” I use 7!
Proper Preparation Prevents PATHETICALLY Piss Poor Performance
My extra “P” (LOL) is in caps.
As a trainer for many years (like 40) I have seen 1000′s of people who “say” they cannot do something. But when I show them that they can it opens up a whole new realm to them.
I love the look in their eyes when they realize that they CAN do it. It’s priceless!

I like it! Some people only use the 5 “P’s” removing “Piss” but I like to keep that in just to give it a bit more emphasis.
I love it when I can show someone that they can do something they thought they couldn’t as you say the look in their eyes (or their writing) is enough to brighten the darkest room!
Thanks for stopping by again, always appreciate your comments mate!
